About the Client
Wesley Cannon, a North Carolina movie prop collector (and co-founder Hollywoodhistoryonline.com) has been a client of Tom Spina Designs for years. We've built him a number of custom mannequins, create portrait sculptures and performed restoration on some of his prized movie props.
He collects movie props and wardrobe from a wide range of films, including many horror movies. Some of his favorite movies are Tim Burton's the Nightmare Before Christmas, a Nightmare on Elm Street, Thirteen Ghosts and Silent Hill.
He got his first movie prop a little over a decade ago - a christmas gift from the show Xena Warrior Princess. Wesley recalls, “I didn't know that props were available and getting that first one sparked the interest. It got me curious to see what else was out there and I went on the hunt. You can see what developed! (laughs)”
Wesley's whole family helped out in setting up the room and they're now working together to decorate the rest of home... though in a slightly less dramatic fashion!
Wesley notes, “I've had this dream of a cave room for years. Tom Spina Designs managed to take my idea far beyond what I'd envisioned. It was an honor to have Tom and Rich help make this dream come true. It was a wonderful experience to work with the artists during the design phase and to watch things come together as they were built. They are top-notch guys and if anyone needs any displays, restoration or theming, Tom Spina Designs is the place to go”

Client Wesley Cannon wanted to be involved in the build. We had him install hundreds of rivets in the movie prop room

The decor & custom furniture concepts would be expanded greatly as they were brought into reality through sculpture
We created dozens of sketches and mockups throughout the design of this home theater and movie prop display room
Rocks almost all started as foam, which is carved to shape and then hardcoated for durability. Furniture AND sculpture!
We tried to incorporate function with a bit of beauty in this corner stalagmite formation by Rich Riley.
An early in-progress picture of the rock island. A nice center piece to the movie prop room in the Man Cave!
Like many of our "metal" pieces, the boilers started as plastic! In fact, nearly all the pipes in the room are PVC with paint fx
This top to a giant faux rock/metal shelving unit is layered with details. Custom furniture beats a standard bookcase!
We created a unique custom plaque design for Wesley to use on future prop displays.
It looks 3-D but isn't!
The rooms were completely bare before work began! Not much of a Man Cave with just sheetrock!
Richard Riley adds layers of character paint to the faux metal walls. Our "rust" even had grit and texture to it.
Tom Spina took most of the photos, but here's a shot of him working on detail painting!
Wesley's brother Kyle was also a big help, doing basic paintwork while the TSD crew worked on the details
A brother's work is never done! Taken from the Movie Prop Room, you can see the Media Room through the arch
After layers of paint, the former sheetrock walls now have the look and feel of old rusty metal!
Richard works to install what we dubbed the "moonshine" shelves, a custom sculpted piece of furniture art!
The little details in a space like this can add up to a larger sense of story for the Home Cinema / Media room
Rich adds a maker's plaque to the boilers - it reads "Spina/Riley"- A subtle way for the artists to sign their work
