The classic style of 1991’s The Rocketeer grabbed the imagination of many fans, including our client. He had a set of Rocketeer movie props including a screen used jetpack with gauntlets, helmet and Hughes blueprints for the pack as well. We endeavored to create a display that featured each of these unique items but also created a cohesive look.
Choosing the direction on prop displays is always a bit of a cooperative effort between our artists and the client. It’s often about finding a balance that would not distract from the prop, but would feel very appropriate and give it some context. We also have to consider how what we create will fit within our client’s home and space… the area that the client had dedicated to the prop display. Many of the options that we will typically discuss with a client will be aesthetic ones, but sometimes people forget that there are plenty of practical ones that need to go into the creation of a prop display. You need to think about budget, the space where it will be displayed and how much of that area you are willing to devote to a prop, and coming up with physical supports to carry the weight of the pieces without potential issues down the road.
For this prop display base we created a faux stone carved plinth that drew inspiration from the deco era of the film and the design of the Griffith Observatory featured at the end of the movie. We arranged the height and layout of the pieces to allow each piece to be featured while creating visual interest. We also had the blueprint professionally mounted in an archival frame to help protect it over time.
The one really unique feature of this particular Jetpack prop was the built in flickering lights and fans that still worked! We had the electronics connected in a way that they could be plugged into a wall and be controlled with the flip of a switch on the back of the themed base. One missing element, the leather harness, was something we commissioned for our client and incorporated into the display.
