Custom Tombstone Prop Event Photo-op

A hand carved, custom tombstone prop photo-op for an album release party

We were contacted by the hip hop trio Flatbush Zombies to create a custom tombstone prop for their upcoming (at the time) album’s release party. While this wasn’t a Halloween party, with a name like the Flatbush Zombies, we figure every event is like Halloween! They wanted something to bring a fun and unique element to their event which was also inspired by the title of the album.

We began this project by discussing with our client their needs for the piece, their deadline and their budget. We were then able to combine all of this information and come up with a design which fit all of their desires as well as their budget. With the design finalized lead foam artist Rich Riley started carving, creating the basic geometric forms as well as the trio of skulls in dense EPS foam.

When the overall shape was completed, artist Samantha Martino added the name of the band as well as the release date to give the piece another touch of personalization. The headstone was then handed over to Patrick Louie who gave the prop a hard coating which added durability as well as a stone like texture. Pat also  used several grey shades and washes to create a realistic stone look. The grave marker was finished with a laser cut version of the albums’s title (in their specific font and style) which was also painted to match the look of the rest of the stone.

The resulting coated foam prop is quite durable, yet lightweight. We love creating unique foam event props and if you have a party or other event that needs an amazing photo op or bold, eye grabbing sculptural element…
