Foam Prop Tombstones for Halloween Display Roundup – Part Two
Everyone probably guessed that are huge Halloween fans. Today’s post is Part Two – another roundup of some of our foam tombstone prop creations! Over the last several years we have helped a wonderful client create a completely unique and over the top Halloween display. Each year, we’ve expanded his large collection of life-size tombstone decorations, a a giant spooky tree, even a custom mausoleum! Each of these props would fit right in at a theme park or haunted event! This collection of tombstone foam props are very, very LARGE! These are some of the biggest we’ve done.
Planning for these started many months before Halloween so there would be ample time for the build. The client had some specific names requested but Richard Riley, our lead foam artist, was creative director on this project and came up with a ton of great ideas that could be fleshed out into big, foam props for this display. As always, Rich carved each or the headstone props in EPS foam. Rich is known for his traditional, hand sculpting but for these, he also incorporated some computer milling and even 3D printing on the Scrooge tombstone, which features a relief bust by our lead 3D artist, Christian Maggi.
EPS foam is carved to shape and assembled, then hard-coated with a polyurea resin coating to provide durability and give these props the ability to be outdoors for a few weeks annually during the traditional Halloween season. Rich textured and painted each prop gravestone for a super-realistic aged look. Folks who see them assume the giant headstones would weigh hundreds or thousands of pounds!
UV paint treatments add another layer of fun and bring some story in to each of these props! During the day, under normal lighting, the special UV-reactive glow paint is pretty much invisible. We use this to add some ghostly messages and references to the subjects and their history. Once you shine blacklight on the prop tombstones, the paint glows and reveals supernatural messages from the beyond!
