Restoring Jack from An American Werewolf in London

"Jack's Back"

After our work helping preserve the original lifesized wolf costume from An American Werewolf in London, collector and friend Bob Burns knew who to call when another prop from the film, the puppet of the character Jack, also needed care.

Griffin Dunne's character, Jack, a member of the living dead in the film, becomes more emaciated as the film goes on.

Rick Baker, the makeup FX wizard who's team created the groundbreaking (and Oscar winning) effects for the film, felt that he needed to go beyond makeup for Jack's final stage.

So a lifesized puppet of Dunne was created, in a much more gaunt look than could've been achieve by traditional means of building over the actor's face.  Seen in the theater scene near the end of the film, the extremely realistic puppet was able to carry an entire conversation and remained convincing over several minutes of screen time.

Eventually, Baker presented the original prop puppet to his long-time friend, collector Bob Burns, who proudly displayed the piece alongside his other historic sci-fi and horror movie props and costumes.

Time however, was not kind to Jack, and the fragile skin of the puppet suffered some pretty extreme damage over the years.

Working at the project over a period of weeks, the TSD crew would work together to bring a bit of life back to this incredible piece of film history.  Patrick Louie performed most of the cleaning, Mike Thomas did much of the conservation and patching and Tom Spina handled rebuilding the larger missing areas and all paint work.

In addition to our work restoring the face, we created a custom body insert to support the puppet (and specifically, hold the head and neck in place, minimizing stress to the remaining foam elements).

Very special thanks to Bob and Kathy Burns and Rick Baker for their trust and support!

And to Brandon Alinger and the Propstore LA crew for their wonderful work packing and shipping the prop to our studio!

The Jack Goodman puppet as he appeared in the 1981 film, An American Werwolf in London

The puppet on arrival in our studio.  The foam was extremely dry, fragile and brittle, with large sections of skin missing.

After a careful cleaning of the foam and hair, we salvaged as much original material as possible.

Mike Thomas worked to preserve the original material and did the early patching

Tom Spina sculpted the larger missing sections, being as faithful to existing references as possible.

The newly restored face, awaiting the painstaking paint matching process.

After the final paint matching...  "Jack's back"! (which was Rick Baker's reaction to the work!)

A custom body insert now supports the torso and holds the head and neck in place.

As always, only the areas we worked on have been painted, leaving as much original material intact as possible.

Jack looks like he's ready to speak again... one can only wonder what he'd say to David now!
