Subspecies 3 Bloodlust Stop Motion Puppet Restoration
Restoration of a Screen Used Subspecies 3 Bloodlust Stop Motion Puppet
This original puppet was used in the 1994 horror film Subspecies 3 Bloodlust. Over time, this foam latex film prop foam had become fragile and had a bit of damage on some of the joints, his long neck and in particular, his toes. Even with a restoration, our goal is to make these props “look good for their age” rather than brand-new. We work to maintain the history of the piece while also helping it better stand up time and be more suitable for display.
We always try to keep our work within “what the piece will allow” as well. In this case, the aging foam was rigid enough that a dramatic repose was ill-advised. Rather than change the pose of the figure, we created a back board and arm rest to safely support the delicate foam latex puppet and hold it in the current pose.
With the pose and mount set, we restored the missing materials and matched any textures. These patches were painted to match the surrounding material. As always, we use “in-painting” where we only paint the new material and any cracks or repairs, leaving all original film-production paint untouched wherever possible. A generous layer of clear sealer was applied to the whole prop puppet to give the foam latex another line of defense against the effects of time.
