Gremlins 2 Mogwai Production Parts Assembly
A unique display for a collection of prototype and production Gremlins 2 Mogwai parts.
A client brought to us various pieces from the production, including a Gizmo face, an all white fur prototype Mogwai body with unfinished foam latex hands and feet, prototype eyes and a pair of painted ears. Since the client had a mostly complete Gizmo face, they asked to finish the rest of the body to match that key element.
We created a wire-armatured custom insert form for the fur body to give a foundation for all of the production made pieces and any additional ones we would need to fabricate. Since the hands and feet were unpainted castings, our studio cleaned up the seams in the foam latex, and painted them to match Gizmo’s on screen look.
Although the face was mostly finished, he was missing a couple of elements. We sculpted custom eyelids and painted them to match the rest of his skin, then added replica eyelashes to each lid.
While the face was intact, the rest of the head was missing and needed to be fabricated from scratch and integrated with the prototype body. We found a white fur that had a similar color and texture to the original fur so that the replica material would not stand out.
The ears were from the production but had patches of fur relating to other Mogwai (likely Lenny and George), which we carefully removed. The ears were then attached to the rest of Gizmo’s head and additional bits of fur added to correctly blend them.
Since the fur bodysuit was all white (as was the reproduction head), our client requested that we add brown painted sections similar to the coloring of the original fur on Gizmo’s face. Painting fur isn’t our first choice, but in this case, the coloration was a close match and it gave this display of production and prototype parts a nice bit of visual completion.
