Spider-Man 2 Doc Ock Props Display

A custom display for a pair Spider-Man 2 Doctor Octopus Props

This display is a showcase for a pair Spider-Man 2 Doc Ock movie props from the 2004 Tobey Maguire film. The props are from the character Doctor Octopus (aka Doc Ock), played by Alfred Molina, who recently reprised the role in Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The classic Marvel character is famous for his mechanical tentacles and our client had an incredibly intricate, and very heavy, life-sized prop tentacle from the film. He also had Otto Octavius’ hat from the film, although was unable to send that to our studio. For the sake of creating the display, a simple brown fedora was used for placement and sizing and that’s what’s shown in the images.

Our client saw our other themed movie prop displays and wanted to do something elaborate and special to give the props a bit of context and fun. Taking inspiration from the bank sequence in the film, and in particular the styling of that building, we hand-crafted a display that really pops and has a ton of presence.

Working with rigid foam, Patrick Louie was the lead sculptor for the display and hand carved the building stone-look facade over a wood frame. The frame within had to be sturdy and balanced, as the tentacle is an extremely heavy prop and would have to be displayed at wavy angle to capture some of the vibe of the character and give it a bit of “life.”   The themed “stone” section was then distressed so that we’d have chunks of damage, as if Doc Ock had done his thing, climbing the building with his tentacles, leaving bits of damage behind.

After that sculpting work was done, Patrick and Sydney Sawyer coated the foam with a flexible surface for additional texture and durability. Pat hand painted everything with layers of distressing, aging and drips to create the appearance of a realistic and damaged building facade. Pierre Briel customized a mount originally provided by Propstore.com with the prop. It had been made for an upright display and needed changes for both look and structure to support the prop safely in the new position.

A full-color metal plaque with an image of Doc Ock and the film’s logo is on a small stand to allow it to be placed wherever our client prefers and that completes the display of these incredible props from Spider-Man 2!
