Midnight Mass Custom Mannequins
A pair of custom mannequins to display original costumes from the Netflix Original series Midnight Mass
Our client had a pair of screen used costumes from Mike Flanagan’s Netflix series, Midnight Mass, and was looking for a unique way to showcase them. We had previously created a pair for custom mannequins to display their “The Haunting of Hill House” costumes. So they decided to go with a similar style display for these costumes. Which included a life-like sculpture in all-white of actors Hamish Linklater and Samantha Sloyan, to give context to the display but allow the costume to have the spotlight.
For this project we opted for a digital sculpture rather than traditional clay, this allowed us to 3D print a samples to ensure the proper sizing with the custom body forms. Unlike traditional clay sculptures, a digital sculpt can be modified for measurements and sizing even after the sculpt is finished.
While the busts were being sculpted we were able to simultaneously work on creating the custom mannequins. We discussed different poses with the client using the show as inspiration and combining that with the realities of their display space. With a custom mannequin we can create each body form to not only have a unique pose but also properly fit the costume. This helps not only with the aesthetic but also to support the costume and help it maintain its shape over time. It’s a challenging process to get right, and finding the proper fit and drape can take quite a bit of time and skill.
Without any spoilers, many of the characters have a glowing effect in their eyes, and the client had the hope we could somehow incorporate that into the figures. We explored may different options including adding lights and glow in the dark paint but none of those gave us the effect we were after. We finally came up with a small white reflective sticker which would fit into each pupil. Most of the time you wouldn’t notice them until they caught the light… then wow! It was a fun and spooky detail that really made these figures unique!
