Original Prop Jumanji Game Board Display
A pair of custom displays for the screen used game board from the Robin Williams classic, Jumanji!
For the 30th Anniversary of the release of Jumanji the town of Keene New Hampshire, which is where the movie was filmed, planned a full weekend of events to celebrate an exciting part of their town’s history. One of our clients owned a screen-used game board from the film and he was more than happy to loan them the prop to allow Jumanji fans to see a piece of film history! They reached out to us to create a display that would not only protect but show off this unique prop!
Since the game board was going to be displayed at The Colonial Theatre in the town, we not only discussed with our client their hopes for the display but we also coordinated with the theater to ensure anything we made would work with their space and the events planned.
For the final design we came up with a pair of displays. The first is a themed display of foam carved to look like rock and stone for display during the Anniversary Weekend’s Events. The second was an elegant museum-style display that complimented the theater’s lobby for the duration of the loan.
Artist Patrick Louie started by taking plain blocks of dense EPS foam and carve them into a variety of different shapes and sizes of stones to cover the entire base. This style of work is something we often do for trade shows or theme parks, but it can also be a nice complement to a film prop display or even a set! Once the shapes were carved he was able to go back in and add cracks and texture to all of the stones for an organic and realistic look. When the sculpture was finished we added a thick spray-hard coating of poly-urea, which helped the piece to be durable enough while all of the visiting guests they were expecting. This hard resin coating also adds some additional texture to the faux stones. To finish off the organic jungle feel, we added creeping vines and leaves.
For an easy transition between displays, we designed a white laminate topper that could swapped from one display base to the other. This also held the custom archival support we created to hold the board game open so viewers could see the ornately carved outside of the box, along with the inner game board.
