Carrie Prom Dress Custom Mannequin

A Custom Display Mannequin for a Screen-Used Carrie Prom Dress

This was our third opportunity to work with Mike Flanagan on a display for one of his costumes! This time it was a screen used costume from the Amazon mini series, Carrie.  We had previously created custom mannequins to display his “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass” costumes. To keep this Carrie prom dress display cohesive with the others in this collection, we aimed for a similar “sculpted head in all white” style figure for this costume, but with a very big (red) twist!

Working with a 3D scan of actress Summer H. Howell, our in-house lead digital artist, Christian Maggi, crafted a 1:1 head, neck and collar for the display. He sculpted in the iconic shocked expression and he used smooth details to match the style we were after. The head was output in high-resolution resin as a bald, realistic head. Samantha Martino customized and styled a shock-white wig to match Summer H. Howell’s onscreen prom hair style.

Matthew Beagan simultaneously started work on creating the custom body form while the head and hair were being created.  A custom mannequin allows us to create each body form not only in a unique pose but also to properly fit the costume. The body was adjusted for waist and chest size as well as height and our custom head was incorporated and smoothed into place. Creating a custom figure can be a challenging and time consuming process, but getting the proper fit and drape make all the difference in a final display.

The costume dress was pre-painted to look like it was covered in blood… so with her dress fitting perfectly on a gleaming white figure, and her bright white hairstyle as prom ready, Patrick Louie came in like Chris Hargensen, to cover everything in fake blood! Rather than using standard theatrical blood, which is tacky and won’t dry, this was a special polymer blend from our friends at Monster Makers that fully cures and looks fresh and amazing! This also led us to one change from the previous displays – the base. Instead of our client’s typical black laminate bases we chose to give Carrie a white one to really allow the blood splatter to pop!

In the end, we took a dress from the hanger and made it into an incredible snapshot from the film!
