Sometimes, you have to go big! Whether it’s our Statue of Liberty foam prop or giant time portal prop, we love carving up big foam pieces into one-of-a-kind creations! It’s also probably not a surprise that we are huge Halloween fans. Over the last couple of years we have helped this incredible client create a completely unique and over the top Halloween display, this year adding an incredible spooky tree foam prop that would be right at home in any theme park!
Rich Riley worked with Patrick Louie to craft this massive prop. The final design is a bit like something out of Scooby Doo or the Wizard of Oz… but bigger and scarier! As always, Rich broke this down into basic geometric forms in a dense EPS foam. With Pat, the two hand carved each part of this tree to create a massive and terrifying tree prop!
The branches became twisted arms with menacing bent fingers. The trunk was shaped and sculpted to have a monstrous face within. A gaping-mouthed, ghostly visage sure to frighten all who catch it’s fearsome gaze!
Once the foam sculpture work was completed, a hard polyurea resin coating was added to provide extreme durability. Layers of browns, grays and greens were painted on and finishing touches like creeping vines, bats and crows for the branches added additional points of interest. Last, but certainly not least, UV paint was added to enhance the prop tree even further. The paint treatment is really effective, because during the day or under normal lighting the UV reactive glow paint is essentially invisible. But under blacklight, the paint glows and gives the tree additional and eerie and supernatural effects, perfect for a haunted Halloween cemetery!
